Rest Day today - decided not to go for a run after all

We had to go over to Kylie's mothers flat to assist with moving stuff so didn't have time in the morning. Come the afternoon everyone was really tired so we went home. Might run home from work tomorrow. Can you tell how high my motivation factor is right now?

Rest Day today, well of sorts.

Hopped on the scales this morning to find that yesterday's excursion with junk food had me put on a kilo. oopsie

Went down to Little Aths this morning to assist with their cross country day. Did up some great flyers last night and while I was waiting for them to finish printing I hopped ontot he Little Aths website to see when their cross country ones were on

Well ... bugger me if all their competition dates co-incided with runs on the AV calendar. What a shocker! So no Little Aths available to run for the club this winter. Deplorable situation

I got roped in to being the "hare" for a couple of the runs, which were only 1500 metres - 2000 metres in length. I under-estimated how hard they go at the start and really had to work at getting away from a couple of 11 and 12 year olds. how embarrassing

Anyway, good time had by all and it was off shopping in Coburg before a restful afternoon at home - as much as you can with three children. Might go for a long run tomorrow. might not

TOTAL DISTANCE (however unintended) = 3 kilometres

Another rest day today, although the body feels alright. This time next week I may well be running to work

Decided to treat my body to some real good junk food so had a classic bacon and egg sandwich - heavy on the bacon - for breakfast, and a chicken schnitzel, cheese and coleslaw roll for lunch. Its going to be a long winter season and plenty of time to shed any excess kilo's this might put on

Gave RunJaneRun a call on the way home and she seems fine altough very sore. Poor thing, she's unco enough in normal situations without having to deal with submerged objects in the dark. A bit rough? Her night out stories are peppered with feeling over here or falling over there and I know she won't mind me saying this. So to cop bad luck like this after all she's been through with her injuries really suck. Perhaps she was a really nasty person in a former life? That karma monster will get you every time

TOTAL DISTANCE = tram stop to bottle shop and off home

Absolutely wrecked today, so much so that gave a moments consideration to not training. Whole body was drained of energy this morning and throughout most of the day. Kylie was doing it much harder though surviving just on caffeine

I had to pick up Hamish from child care her I would take him to the track until Kylie could pick him up. He was such a good boy and played quietly while I trained until Chris Harrap's children Nicholas and Patrick showed up

Session tonight was 4 x 1 km efforts with 200 metre walk recovery between each one. I decided that there was no point going hard with 3 min efforts if all I was going to do all winter was 3:20 - 3:30's at the fastest. So decided to try for 3:20 and work down from there

Blew that plan out of the water with 3:11 on the first rep, although pleasingly the next reps were all quicker - 3:09, 3:05 and 3:02. Happy with that but not sure its the sort of pacing I need to do for the winter season

New guy Liam Magee had an excellent session after 15 years out from being a very good runner at High School. He was just behind me and will be one to watch - six months from now he may well have mantle of best Coburg runner and that would be awesome. Someone to push with

Just before we began training a friend of ours RunJaneRun decided to run on the grassy surrounds outside the track. She said if she was not back in 40 minutes, send out a search party. Well we finished our session and it was like 7:35 pm and we were kinda concerned we had not seen her back yet. I should have checked my phone as at 7:20 pm RJR had left a message to say she was at hospital!! She badly gashed her knee in a story that only she can tell - check it out : http://jojo-runjanerun.blogspot.com/

Anyhoo, Kylie stayed on the track with the children, so had several beers, and it was off home to tuck the kidlets in bed. Amelia seemed cherry ripe today although you could tell she was slightly off. Still, amazing turnaround from last night's very sick and sorry child

TOTAL DISTANCE = about 5.5 kilometres

Rest day today. Part of that whole easing myself back in

Kylie had a meeting to get to tonight, so I looked after the children once I got home from work. They seemed fine although Amelia was a little cranky so I put her down early. Read Hamish a story then put him down a little earlier

Amelia kept on waking up and crying every half hour. Managed to cuddle her back to sleep at one point, and she slept another 40 minutes. She woke up again at 10:20 pm just as Kylie got home. We called the night nurse hotline and they suggested it would be safer if we took her to the hospital for a look over. That was at 11:15 pm

So poor Kylie was at the hospital until 4:30 am where they diagnosed her with an ear infection

Training tomorrow is going to be fun but poor Kylie is going to have a tough day of things, being so tired and having to do a few hours at work to finish off the business BAS statement

Run home from work tonight

Got that familiar soreness that you get after a tough session when you haven't done one for a while. Sore all over

Decent pace on the run tonight, but decided I wanted to ease myself into full training so just did 30 minutes

Ate dinner with the children and put them to bed as Kylie left as soon as I got home to go to a meeting

TOTAL DISTANCE = about 7 kilometres

Monday, 7 April 2008

Had a meeting at Aberfeldie tonight so posted a letter off to RunJaneRun and then left work to head off to Essendon for a track session devised by Brian

The session called for 3 sets of 5 x 300's with 100 m job between each effort and 5 mins between the sets. Was running short on time so only had 4 mins break between 1 and 2 and 4.5 minbs break before set 3

Not sure what I was doing the first set in becuase i set off with the 300 first only to find the 300 is not marked on the track like at Coburg! doh!! But in set's two and three I started off the 100 jog recovery and started at the 1500 metre start with the finish on the finish line

Very pleased to run through each of those at 53 seconds each, with barely a second in deviation. Last one I pumped out in 51 seconds. Very pleased with myself but with it having been two weeks essentially since my last real competition run, I should be able to pump out good 300's with such fresh legs

TOTAL DISTANCE = about 6.5 kilometres including warm up and down

Rest Day Today. The second and last week of my summer season break. No more running until next week, so will start blogging again then

Sunday, 30 March 2008

Rest Day

Today was the club's 6 Hour Track Race. I stupidly asked Mark for a lift and he picked me up at 6:50 am. Helped set up and after the race starred at 9:00 am did some recording for 2 hours before taking a break to look after the children

Took over the race call with two hours to go and had a bit of fun with the microphone as I always do

We went out to the pub for dinner that night with the 24 Hour Organising Crew - all the usual suspects : Chris & Deb, Brian & Jo, Mark & Charlotte - and we got home at 9:00 pm after being pretty much out all day. So no chance of a run, even if I had wanted to

Saturday, 29 March 2008

First run of the club's 2008 winter calendar today with the club's AGM to be held afterwards. Had been waiting for this day for over six months, since I made the decision to have a stab at becoming President

As for the run, well our winter captain wasn't there so it was up to me to announce the vourse and at 2:00 pm off we went. We had a couple of new fellows with us in Wes and Liam Magee and the return of marathon specialist Sam Tabit. Last year he ran 3:13 for the marathon, so hopefully he will give our top team a bit of grunt
My job was to take the fast group and unfortunately I went out too fast, although that wasn't apparent until I had got about 1 km in. Had to stop to go to the loo after 10 mins in and spent the rest of the first half of the event catching up to the lead runners. Managed to overtake Liam at the half way point and lead the rest of the way to the finish but there was only 300 metres in it, so look for big things from Liam. And Sam Tabit came home third so a very promising beginning to the winter. I was absolutely rooted afterwards and yet again I did not take this as easily as I should have. Stupid really, becuase all week I had been saying I was going to treat this as an easy run
What was disappointing was the reasonably small turn up for the first winter race of the season. And that meant not as many AV forms submitted as last year. Hopefully numbers will pick up a bit as we near the season start in two weeks
The AGM was an absolute bust. No-one nominated me for President so Kylie rescued me and then there was this huge pause as everyone looked around, but no-one seconded. Luckily someone finally came to my second rescue. I was up against Mark Kelly and he won convincingly. So I lick my wounds until next year and thank the six people who did vote for me - it was a secret ballot but I found out later who my real friends were

Rest day again today

Scored an awesome coupla hours at the pub after work with Kylie at her aunity's with the children

Stopped off on the way home to get her some bourbon and went to this pub that is all pokies and TAB with nothing else to offer. What a shocker!

Rest day

Went to training today if only to watch. They had the same session as me last Thursday, except that they were doing 1 easy, 1 medium, 1 hard x 1 km time trial. Josh and Luong did 3:02 for their last 1 km effort. I think the young lad will be one to watch this winter

The children and I had fish n' chips for dinner

Rest Day

Last committee meeting for the 2007 committee ahead of our 2008 AGM on Saturday

Time for some time off - Rest day today

Kinda - went to the park with the children, and Charlotte's children. A pleasant afternoon followed by pizza for dinner. Tasty!

Monday, 24 March 2008 - Stawell Gift Day 3

While this was "Finals" day at the Stawell Gift the only thing on my mind was the two mile race

After my usual warm up, I lined up next to a veteran of pro running Greg Barton. As is usual in pro running, my competitor was going to snub me - so I shook his hand instead and wished him the best of luck

The race had a big field of thirty runners with some real quality. I started off far too quick and went through the first lap in 72 seconds. I know this because some naughty person was calling out lap ratings on the bend. Was feeling like I was pushing the pace hard and 75 second laps through the next two was a pretty good indication

Neverthrless, this tactic of a hard start was paying off - I was working in with my fellow starter Greg Barton and together we were about to overhaul the last two frontmarkers and take the lead. This was just as we were starting our fourth lap. Suddenly I was going head over heals and some prick had tripped me up from behind. I rolled over on the ground and one of my shoes had fallen off. I was thnking get my shoes back on before I wiselyt decided instead to rip the other one off and continue running

I had no idea where I was now placed in the field, assuming I was middle of the race. Just tried to finish off as best I could and 200 metres out from home I could see there weren't that many in front me. So I somehow found this kick that I hadn't had all season and past two runners to finish in sixth place and take home $80

Given it was my last run for the season, I indulged myself in a couple of VB's and a meat pie afterwards

A steak sandwich for dinner and once the children were settled, I skived off to the Stawell Gift Hotel for a couple of stubbies,. Stumbled in the motel door around midnight

And thus ends my summer season

TOTAL DISTANCE = about 7 kilometres

Sunday, 23 March 2008 - Stawell Gift Day 2

I was pretty fatigued last night after my race, but luckily the motel has an outdoor pool and I was able to spend 20 minutes doing some cold water recovery. It helped immensely!

I was in a race today - the Novice 1600 - which I was probably more chance to pick up some money in

Felt like I was pushing pretty hard through the race, but in the end could manage only 11th place and a slightly slower time than yesterday. This time around 4:11 and an equivalent time of 4:24 over 1500 metres

Perhaps I was not running as relaxed as yesterday but still the Stawell carnival is a big step up in standard so a pretty satisfactory performance to finish 11th ahead of 14 other runners. With a bit of luck and a better mark I can set my sights on this race for next year

Another cold water recovery should see me right for my 2 mile race tomorrow. Not sure how I will go but think I have a reasonable chance of another top 10 finish off my mark of 260 metres

TOTAL DISTANCE = 5.5 kilometres including warm up and warm down

Saturday, 22 March - Stawell Gift Day 1

Got woken up four times last night. Twice to go to the baby, once to help Amelia back into bed (she had fallen out) and once to go to the toilet to take the longest wee I have ever taken. Must have been the gallons of water I drank before lights out to offset the inevitable morning hangover

My race was at 11:00 am, so we had to get to Central Park nice and early. Kylie wanted to walk for exercise so we walked the 20 minutes to the venue from our motel room

I started off my race alright and was feeling good. Didn't really make up much ground until the thid lap, but was really moving the pack in the last 300 metres or so. Got caught on a big pack with 150 metre left. One of the backmarkers went with me and he eased off and mentally I did the same, so wasn't real pleased with that when analysing my race later

There was drama aplenty when runners placed first and second with 40 metres to go both spectacularly tripped over each other and fell to the ground in a heap. The girl involved was staying in my motel. I was in the pack behind them and we all ran around them!

Afterwards, I was the first person to go over and see if she was okay. She was still in the hands of the trainer 20 minutes later

Got really cranky with the admin people as it was not until after 4 pm that they posted the results of my race. Yes, my 11 am race! Shocked to find that I had run 4:09, which was equivalent to 4:22 for a 1500 race. Didn't think I was in that sort of form after only three months and looking forward to tomorrow

TOTAL DISTANCE = about 5.5 kilometres

Friday, 21 March - Good Friday

Rest Day Today

The long drive up to Stawell. Arrived there to find our name on a list with our room number next to it. Sweet! Drove to our room and the door is unlocked with the key inside

Go out for dinner and try to have something light ahead of my first race of the weekend tomorrow. So had a very tasty Thai Chicken Salad

Two light beers and we go back to the motel where I proceed to consume almost a full bottle of red wine. Not to worry - ran 34.08 for a 10 km after getting shitfaced on red wine the night before so should be an interesting result tomorrow!

Thursday, 20 March 2008

Brian wasn't at training tonight so he set me a session

The main group had 8 x 600's with easy, medium, hard every 200. While I was preparing for my session I had to have a word to young Josh Persson who went out way too hard for his first two sets. He finished off really well and is looking in good shape

As for my session, it was five laps of surge the barrier, then a break and a set of 6 x 200's. The 5 lapper was pretty tough as I was probably doing the easy bits at about my 5 km/10 km pace. Had worked up a bloody good sweat by the end of it

The 200's I did at a good clip and felt in good shape as they didn't get much tougher as I completed each one. Sometimes these can seem pretty tough but evidently the taper is working beautifully

A few beers while I waited for Kylie before going home to do some more packing for tomorrow - the Good Friday drive up to Stawell

TOTAL DISTANCE = about 4 kilometres including warm up and down

Rest day today

Training with Brian today and probably the last hard track session before the weekend

Felt quite smug as Brian outlined an arduous hill training session for the main group and they were headed out the back gate, this is until ...

Brian said I had 3 x 1 km time trial runs at race pace. doh! the one saving grace was that I had ten minutes recovery between each

Unfortuantely, with no watch I have no idea how fast I ran them. Had to head into the clubrooms after each one so I could watch the clock in there to get my ten minute recovery in

The last one I did pretty tough, but it still felt reasonably strong. Was pretty stuffed afterwards

TOTAL DISTANCE = about 4 kilometres including warm up and down

Monday, 17 March 2008

With the final week now heading into Stawell and the culmination of three months of relatively hard work, wanted everything to go right to ensure I was as fresh as possible for the weekend

Still had a sore throat from yesterday, which was odd. Hopefully that will go away as the day progresses

The plan was for a very easy 30 - 35 minute run. Unfortunately, after giving my watch to Kylie yesterday to time my daughter in the naughty spot she misplaced my watch! So today I had to guess the time spent running

Wanted to make this as comfortable as possible and so it turned out to be, with a very pleasant feeling of plenty in the tank when I hopped onto the tram on St Georges Rd

Very happy with that and looking forward to seeing what Brian has in store for me tomorrow

DISTANCE = about 6 kilometres
